The Watchdog’s Greatsword is one of the easiest Colossal Swords to get and use in Elden Ring, and it’s perfect for any build that primarily focuses on Strength. Though it isn’t a specialty weapon, the Watchdog’s Greatsword excels at attacking multiple enemies at once with a single cleave. The weapon requires players to have their Strength stat at 30 and their Dexterity at 10, making it an easy weapon for Warrior, Hero, and Vagabond builds to use in Elden Ring.
Although the Watchdog’s Greatsword only deals physical and critical damage, it significantly increases the defenses of its wielder against all physical and magic attacks. Additionally, the Watchdog’s Greatsword can also be infused with Ashes of War and upgraded with Smithing Stones, allowing players to further enhance its power. One of the best Ashes of War that players can apply to the weapon is the Cragblade skill, which, when applied as heavy at the blacksmith, gives a 30% strength boost to scaling.

The Watchdog’s Greatsword can be obtained as a reward once players defeat a sword-wielding Watchdog in the Mountaintops of the Giants, like the Erdtree Burial Watchdog in Elden Ring. Watchdogs move slowly but attack with a lot of power and speed through their Greatsword and magic attacks. Tarnished must keep their guard up for the Watchdog’s slash attack, sword smash, cleaves, thrusts, and any elemental magic attack they might have such as fire or frost. Watchdogs can be found in two locations, namely the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs and the Giant-Conquering Hero’s Grave.
The Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs is a dungeon that is east of the Zamor Ruins Site of Grace in Elden Ring. From the Zamor Ruins, continue along the path until a group of enemies and Fire Prelate are reached, then using their location as a marker turn back and to the right to find the entrance. Once inside this Elden Ring dungeon, continue until a lift is reached, activate it then quickly get off of it, and a second lift will appear. Take the second lift down to reach two Watchdogs, and the Greatsword can be earned as a drop reward from the second one.
The Giant-Conquering Hero’s Grave is another dungeon that is west of the Giants Graeve Post Site of Grace. A Fire Monk will appear shortly after heading inside the dungeon. Take the path that it approaches from, continue onward toward the windows, and drop down to the next level. Players will need to bring this Watchdog into the light before it can be defeated, but it can drop the Greatsword as a reward before this optional Elden Ring boss is beaten.
Elden Ring is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
